CSR, the Cambridge based Bluetooth pioneer, is to be acquired by Qualcomm in a deal which values it at around $1.6billion. Subject to the usual approvals, the deal is expected to close in the middle of 2015. Qualcomm's CEO Steve Mollenkopf said the move would complement and strengthen the company's expertise in the areas of automotive infotainment, portable audio, wearable devices and the Internet of Everything.

ABI Research predicts that wearable computing devices such as smart watches will "explode in popularity" and grow to 485 million annual device shipments by 2018. Behind these devices exists a technology called Bluetooth Smart, designed to consume less power than traditional Bluetooth technology.

Since its inception, Bluetooth was supposed to be the definitive standard for 'personal area networks', connecting a myriad of devices in a cloud of radio activity around your body.
